Student Futures Success: Bhamini Khandige Reflects on Her Hexa Finance Internship

Stuart Mason, Bhamini Khandige & Ben Davies

Meet Bhamini

Could you introduce yourself, your educational background, and tell us a bit more about Hexa Finance, where you have been interning?

My name is Bhamini Khandige, and in July 2026, I graduated from Cardiff University with a BA in English Literature. I’ll be going on to study an MSc in Strategic Entrepreneurship and Innovation over the next year.

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern with Hexa Finance as a Social Media and Marketing Insight intern. Hexa Finance is a commercial finance broker based in South Wales, working with businesses across the UK to help companies access the funding they need to grow — from asset finance and business loans to commercial mortgages.

Finding the opportunity

What initially attracted you to this placement, and how did you first hear about the opportunity?

Cardiff University has brilliant career support for its students, connecting us with work experience opportunities through its Student Futures scheme. After seeing the advert for this position on the Student Futures page, I decided to apply — and the rest is history!

I had never heard of Hexa before applying, but the job advert highlighted that the placement would include everything from market research and social media content creation to supporting brand campaigns and website development.

I loved the scope of the internship and felt that I would leave with a breadth of new interests and skills from learning from the best in the business.

A chance to explore new areas

What unique professional or personal opportunity did you see in this internship that you felt you couldn’t get elsewhere?

Over the last few years, I have worked on social media content and strategy across a number of different platforms. I saw this internship as an opportunity to combine my interests and previous experience in a new way.

I was able to take my existing interests and apply them to the finance world and a professional business environment. There were plenty of reasons why this opportunity stood out to me.

Firstly, a lot of work nowadays is remote, and this placement being in person appealed to me. I was keen to learn more about corporate office life and workplace culture. I also thought the role would be a great introduction to the finance world, in case it was something I wanted to pursue further in the future.

The internship also gave me the chance to work on real case studies, including a case study on Hexa’s financing for The Cold Room during my first week. This was a brilliant introduction to both the internship and the world of business finance.

The opportunity really highlighted the importance of networking within the industry, as well as the diversity of Hexa’s clientele.

Learning how a business operates

What was the primary goal or main task you were set when you first started, and how did it align with what you wanted to learn?

George, the Marketing Executive at Hexa, and I devised a detailed plan for my time there to ensure that I got as much as possible out of my seven weeks at the business.

My primary goal when I first started was to learn about the inner workings of a company and understand how the marketing team supports wider company operations. For me, this included learning which software is used, what project development looks like from start to finish, and how key decisions are made within the company.

Over the course of the seven weeks, I was able to gain an insight into all of this by sitting in on website development meetings, listening in on sales calls, and being taught how to promote new brand campaigns.

Overcoming the learning curve

When you first stepped into the role, what did you see as your biggest personal challenge, and how did you overcome it?

I wasn’t worried about my creative experience coming into the role. I believed in my own skills and hardworking mindset, so this wasn’t an issue.

My biggest personal challenge was my lack of knowledge of the finance sector. After all, my Bachelor’s degree involved a lot of academic reading and rather less on commercial mortgages!

I was able to ease into the finance world and learn a lot in the process. It definitely helped to spend some time breaking down finance jargon and taking notes on how business finance worked during my first week at Hexa.

I also studied Economics at A Level, so I found a lot of concepts coming back to me, which was interesting as I had very much missed studying the subject.

Everyone in the office was incredibly good at breaking down key terms and processes for me, which I appreciated a lot. They never made me feel like any question was irrelevant or silly.

A varied working day

What were your main day-to-day responsibilities, and how did you go about managing your workload?

Every day at Hexa looked a little different, but it was well structured, which I appreciated. Every morning started with a catch-up with George to recap everything I had completed and learned.

George always had tasks set out for me and made sure to go over industry-specific concepts that I was likely to use in the future.

My tasks included planning and creating social media content, supporting campaign and brand activity, helping to write blogs, emails and web content, carrying out competitor and market research, updating website content, and design work.

George outlined my tasks for the day, and it was relatively straightforward for me to work through them. I always had an estimate in mind of how long a task should take, which helped me stay on track.

That being said, one of my biggest takeaways from my time at Hexa was something George told me on my first day: in marketing, it is better to take your time and do something as well as possible rather than sharing something that isn’t polished and will need multiple, unnecessary drafts.

That advice stuck with me, and it is something I will carry forward beyond my internship. I therefore never put too much pressure on myself to finish as many tasks as possible. Instead, I focused on completing each task to a high standard.

Developing professional skills

What key technical or soft skills have you developed here, and how would you describe the support and mentorship you received from the team?

Throughout my time at Hexa, I found that the team was incredibly close and collaborative. The open-plan office allowed everyone in the team, from sales to customer service, to be around each other and communicate throughout the day.

While the majority of my time was spent with George, I learned about all aspects of the business and have come out of the internship knowing more about web development, using AI in business, client proposals, and many other areas.

As I mentioned previously, the team was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I found the office environment very comfortable to be a part of, which was a reflection of the friendly work culture at Hexa.

I left the internship with greater confidence in using business systems, maintaining spreadsheets, CRM reports and software. This opportunity was an amazing chance to create professional content for social media and campaigns, as well as contribute to and develop real business skills.

A standout project

What has been your single proudest achievement or most successful project milestone during your time with Hexa Finance?

While it’s hard to pick just one achievement, I’d have to say I was most proud of my work on the Hexa Finance and Augmented Instincts joint construction campaign.

For this project, I created captions and social media copy for Hexa’s social channels, including Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook.

I was able to take the information presented to me in a flyer and turn it into supporting copy, making sure to include a headline, the key message and industry-specific terminology.

It was rewarding to see my work being used as part of a real campaign and to put the skills I had developed into practice.

Looking to the future

Looking back at the opportunity you were given, what is the most significant long-term impact this internship has had on your career confidence and future goals in Wales?

This internship undoubtedly left its mark on me. It was the best introduction to the corporate world that I could have asked for, and I am very grateful for my time at Hexa.

I left the internship feeling calmer about entering the professional world after completing my Master’s degree. I also left with a strong understanding of professional marketing, business finance and workplace operations.

The internship solidified my interest in the professional marketing world, and I feel very encouraged to enter the industry.

No one knows what the future holds, but it is my goal to stay in South Wales for my career. I look forward to working — and networking — to make this happen over the next few years.

I also look forward to staying in touch with the team at Hexa Finance and continuing to learn from them, as well as keeping up with developments in the business finance world.

Advice for future interns

What advice would you give to another student or graduate who is going on to become an intern?

The opportunity to do an internship is invaluable. I would highly encourage students to keep an eye out for similar opportunities and apply. After all, all experience is good experience.

In terms of application tips, make sure that you know what you want out of the internship, as well as having a good understanding of what the company you’d like to intern for does.

I’d also say that it is always beneficial to ask questions about anything you are unsure about or need help with. As an intern, you’re not expected to know everything — passion and a willingness to learn are the most important factors in being offered an internship.

In short, know what you bring to the role, and what the role can bring you, and make sure to make the most of your time at the business.

Make a good impression, and you will certainly reap the benefits.

And to anyone eager to work with Hexa Finance, it is such a friendly yet professional atmosphere, so enjoy it to the fullest and cherish your time, as I did.

We have loved having you at Hexa Finance, Bhamini!
